Starting a new school is never easy. But for high school sophomore Chance Marquis, stranded in the mid-’80s when hair was high and so was homophobia, the newbie transition is especially fraught. Eccentric, alienated, and openly gay, he's a teenager marked for harassment by the queer-hating resident bully. Desperate to make a place for himself and connect with people, Chance enlists two friends—a popular jock and a drag queen—to help him find any way to fit in and be accepted by his new school. Chance’s year of self-discovery leads him to find strength in his own voice, both figuratively and literally, as he gains the courage to become the lead singer in a rock band. Through all his trials, he learns that as bizarre as his family and friends may seem, they form a foundation of strength and support that help him through the tough times.
